Hi. I'm Lizza.

I received my M.S. in Instructional Technology in December 2016 from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Throughout my course work I gained hands-on experience applying the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management and evaluation of instructional systems. I worked with a variety of real-world clients, ranging from the State Archives of North Carolina, the Office of e-Learning at UNCW and the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago.

I enjoy thinking analytically and creatively about instructional content and translating it into engaging, meaningful experiences for learners. I have experience designing instructor-led, blended and computer-based training and instructional materials. I am proficient in learner and training needs analysis, identification and creation of learning objectives, curriculum design and development, motivational design, storyboarding and creating detailed design plans, e-learning development, multimedia production, interactive assessments and evaluation.

Online Professional Development Module

This project was completed as part of my employment as a graduate assistant with the ELMS Project at UNC Wilmington. I assisted a team of instructional designers to edit, develop, test and revise a series of self-directed learning modules for a 10-hour online professional development course. The course was designed to provide North Carolina teachers and administrators with foundational knowledge about the field of ESL and working with English Language Learners (ELLs). Modules were developed using Articulate Storyline. Provided is an example of one of the learning modules.

Design & Development of Self-Directed Learning Module

Fall 2014: This project was completed as part of an introductory Instructional Systems Design course. I worked with a fellow student to design and develop a self-directed learning module for the State Archives of North Carolina to provide patrons with instructions on how to order an archive online. The module was developed using Adobe Captivate. The accompanying report details the analysis, design, development and formative evaluation of the computer-based learning module.

Front-end Analysis & Training Plan Proposal

Spring 2015: This project was completed as part of a Design and Development of Instructional Technology course. I worked with two fellow students to develop a front-end analysis and training plan proposal for the Office of e-Learning at UNC Wilmington to address the need for training faculty members on ADA compliance in online courses. Part I consisted of a detailed system-wide front-end analysis to determine the root causes of the performance issue and determine effective strategies for training solutions. Based on the findings of the analysis, Part II consisted of the design and development of a proposal to design, develop, implement and evaluate training interventions.

I presented this project in a poster session as part of the Design and Development Showcase at the annual convention of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) in October 2016.

Change Management Plan

Spring 2016: This project was completed as part of an Organization and Management of Instructional Technology course. I worked with a fellow student to develop a technology change management plan for the Museum of Science and Industry Chicago to effectively plan and implement the adoption of appropriate technology infrastructure to provide educational programming at a distance. The proposal outlines a three-year technology plan to select and implement a Learning Management System (LMS).

Principles of change management and technology planning were applied to this proposal which included the formulation of a change management team, assessment of resources, gap analysis, implementation plan, communication plan, professional development plan, technology support services, budget, timeline, and evaluation plan.

Program Evaluation

Spring 2016: This project was completed as part of a Evaluation and Change in Instructional Development course. I worked with two fellow students to plan and conduct a program-level evaluation for a grant-funded online teacher professional development program at UNC Wilmington. The evaluation was conducted for the Educating Language Minority Students (ELMS) Project to analyze the effectiveness of a redesigned ESL professional development course, as compared to the original course. The report describes the evaluation design, data collection and analysis, findings and recommendations.

Project Management Plan

Fall 2015: This project was completed as part of a Managing Instructional Development course. I worked individually to develop a Project Charter and Project Management Plan in response to a fictional Request for Proposal (RFP) by the Department of Defense to develop, implement and train personnel to effectively utilize a gaming platform to provide scenario-based combat training.

Principles of project management, such as planning, scheduling, allocating resources, budgeting, proposal preparation, cost control and personnel management were used to plan, design and develop the proposed project plan.

Motivational Analysis of Instruction

Summer 2015: This project was completed as part of a Motivation in Instructional Design course. I worked with a fellow student to analyze an existing computer-based learning module. A systematic motivational design process, based on Keller’s (2010) ARCS Model for Learner Motivation, was used to analyze the learners and learning materials based on the elements of attention, relevancy, confidence, and satisfaction. Based on this analysis, a set of tactics were identified to improve learner motivation. Prototypes of enhanced versions of the materials were developed using PowerPoint.

Instructional Design Storyboard

Spring 2015: This project was completed as part of an Educational Gaming and Simulation course. I developed a brief storyboard prototype to illustrate and communicate the design of an introductory segment for an educational game. The game was designed for 4th grade students to explore the properties of light. The learning objectives of the game were designed to align with the NC 4th Grade Science Curriculum Standards.

Design Based Research

December 2016: This project was completed as my master's thesis for the M.S. in Instructional Technology program at UNC-Wilmington. I conducted a literature review on Problem-based learning (PBL), instructional scaffolding and online/web-based learning to develop a conceptual framework for designing computer-based scaffolds to support PBL in an online environment where an instructor is not present. The framework was used to design and develop three online modules for a graduate level course utilizing PBL. The modules and designed scaffolds were assessed and evaluated for effectiveness.

I presented this project as part ofroundtable session titled "Using PBL to enhance efficacies and identify potential" at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in April 2018.
